The Sauce Kitchen
From humble beginnings in a single restaurant to a sauce empire with over 50 products.
In 1992, Jorge Calisto opened the original Calisto’s Portuguese restaurant in Turffontein, where he began crafting his own sauces, spices, and marinades. His Peri-Peri Sauce quickly gained popularity, attracting hot sauce lovers and chilli enthusiasts from across Gauteng.
By 2010, after nearly two decades of success, Jorge embraced a new vision by franchising Calisto’s and founding Senhora Sauce Kitchen—now known as The Sauce Kitchen—to produce standardised sauces for the franchises.
As the brand expanded, so did the sauce production. In 2012, Jorge converted a nearby house into a dedicated sauce facility. Today, The Sauce Kitchen offers over 50 sauce and spice products, including the famous Calisto’s Peri-Peri Sauces, and continues to make strides in the retail sector.
